Fourth Grade
Poetry

| Every year, the fourth grade class spends several weeks focusing on the art of writing poetry. We have had the privilege for many years of working with Perie Longo, a gifted poet and teacher. Perie teaches poetry in many of Santa Barbara's schools. Some of our students' poems have been published in a collection of poetry from students across the state. Here are some of the poems written by fourth grade students this year. |

by Emily Your love is like an exotic swirl with many different colors You love is a twist of the rainbow Your love is like roses, pretty pink roses Your love is made up of orange, red purple, and yellow Your love is like the glimmering and shining sun Your love is something I can't live without But I can go on with your love It's very special |

by Philip My fish they are mine Until that fateful day you will go away But till then I will be there To feed you, to play with you, And to do more And once again you are my fish until that day you go That day passed already, But I will always remember you as my fish The king and queen of my 10-gallon tank And everything else |

by Jack When you're alone, you fall down, down, down, Like a tear of crystal clear water, And as it hits the ground, It bursts into loneliness You wait for a friend to hold your hand And you don't feel lonely anymore But until then, you're trapped in world of blackness, In an impenetrable bubble of sadness, And then with a single touch of a friend, The bubble pops, and the darkness fades Never to return |

by Shannon You saw the future, a scary thing You saw your friends get in trouble at school Hurting your fingers, using your favorite tool You saw your brother getting married and having children You saw yourself leaving your college dorm room You saw your parents grow old You saw the inventions that gave you a fright You saw your baby crying all night You saw yourself going to your high school reunion You saw people landing on Mars You now know what the future holds, Because you have seen your life, So clear, so bold |

by Liza I see a baby jaguar glistening in the sun With his lazy eyes, awaken to a new world I see a baby jaguar, fishing for fish in the stream Like his mother would do for him, but he can't I see a baby jaguar, as the size of a cat, purring around the others, But he can't find her I see a baby jaguar in my back yard, watching the sunset go away His eyes getting lazy again, and he falls asleep I see a baby jaguar, waking up from the sunrise, With his lazy eyes just opening And there she is, his mother, laying by his side Welcoming him to the new world |

by Natalie The African elephant has really big ears, long tusks, and he's really tall. He has a long nose to suck his food He came over to me for my apple, so I gave it to him. Although the African elephant is the largest And most powerful of all the living land mammals, It is also among the most gentle, Living in the peaceful family units |

by Ben One day, not so long ago, As I was boogie-boarding at the beach Out of the corner of my eye, came a dark brown shape I thought it was a swimmer, until I saw the flipper I then knew it was a seal I was surprised as he was only twenty feet off shore I want to thank him for his dark brown fur, like the soil after it rains, For the eyes that stared at me, like those of a pup I want to thank him for the memories he put in my heart |

By Katherine I am thankful for the stampeding horses For giving me a glimpse of wilderness I want to thank them when their fur shines like butterscotch When the sun shines on them I want to thank the horses for giving me a feel for their life I want to thank them for running like a delicate lily, Swifting in the air I want to thank the horses for their neigh that is like fireworks Bursting in my heart I want to thank the horses for their mysterious fur I want to thank them for their summer warm comfort I want to thank the horses for their warm sunset heart |

by Luther Basketball is like a party because all of your friends are there It makes me feel good every time I make a basket Like whenever the crowd cheers for me and after a win Or when we give it our all It is so cool when I am not on the court So me and my friends can make up silly jokes After the game, me and my dad go home Even if we lose, as long as we play our hearts out, I am fine I love the game! |

by Devin I want to thank space for its beautiful galaxies Andromada is like Saturn because it looks like it's just one billion times bigger The Orion Nebula is like a bird flying around a ball of energy Galaxy M104 is like a giant sombrero with a black hole in its core The Ring Nebula is like a giant ring that had a supernova |

by Sean Drops of rain are like silver gum drops that melt when they hit the ground. They come out of the clouds like popcorn breaking out of a bag in the microwave. Rain taps like a bunch of hands that want something. Rain is like a bunch of crazy bugs that crash into the ground like sparks shattering. |

by Tommy Winston, my one and only dog I will feed you for the rest of my life I will hold you and pet you for the rest of time I will play with you merrily in the sun I ask you one thing only don't leave me too soon My fish, why did you leave me? I fed you your favorite food I played fun games with you I helped clean your bowl Oh, why did you leave me so soon? My parents guide me through life They tell me what to do and how to do it They help me with the hardest problems They love and care about me I am thankful they are still here |

by Clay Have you ever thought that hail is a lonely sea, Frozen from hatred? It tries to act gentle but is only tough Hail wants to fall like feathers, but only falls like pebbles When they hit the ground They shatter like words being dropped And run away like a feather getting blown across the sky When it melts, it looks like it's blooming flowers |
